The Zones of Regulation is a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Program that helps children understand, talk about, and manage their emotions. It organizes feelings and levels of alertness into four colour zones so children have clear, easy language to describe how they feel.
Children are often taught that some emotions are “bad”—especially anger, frustration, or sadness. When kids believe these feelings are wrong, they may start to think they are wrong for having them. This can make emotions feel overwhelming and harder to talk about. The Zones of Regulation helps change this story. It teaches children that all emotions are normal, all emotions have a purpose, and all Zones are okay. By understanding their Zone and learning tools to respond, children gain confidence, self-awareness, and better control.
The zones are divided by energy levels experienced in the body when experiencing a variety of emotions
Blue Zone: Low-energy feels such as sadness, tiredness, boredom, or not feeling well.
Green Zone: Calm, focused, and ready to learn.
Yellow Zone: Higher-energy feelings that are still in control, like excitement, silliness worry, or frustration.
Red Zone: Very strong energy, such as anger, panic, or overwhelm.
Sessions are designed to be engaging, developmentally appropriate, and responsive to each child’s unique strengths and interests. Activities are purposefully selected to match the child’s preferred ways of learning—whether through movement, creative expression, storytelling, hands-on tasks, or imaginative play. This approach supports meaningful engagement while making emotional learning accessible and enjoyable.
Each session is one hour in duration and delivered within a structured, supportive learning environment. Services are primarily offered on a one-on-one basis to ensure individualized attention and personalized skill development. When appropriate, small group sessions may be available for children with compatible interests and low behavioural needs, providing opportunities for positive peer interaction and shared learning experiences.
Caregivers receive clear, practical suggestions to help reinforce skills at home and support consistency across environments. The overall program is designed to be educational, strengths-based, and child-centred, promoting confidence, emotional awareness, and the development of lifelong self-regulation skills.
