Overview:
The Behavioural Support Worker provides individualized behavioural support to clients across various settings in line with our core values and mission statement. This role focuses on implementing behaviour strategies, collecting data, and supporting skill development using evidence-based practices. Behavioural Support workers promote meaningful behaviour changes, independence, and overall quality of life through direction of the behavioural team.
Key Responsibilities
Behaviour Support & Intervention
Implement individualized Behaviour Support Plans (BSP) as developed by the behavioural team.
Use behaviour change strategies, reinforcement systems, and skills-teaching methods aligned with evidence-based practices as directed.
Support clients in reducing challenging behaviours through trauma-informed approaches, while teaching adaptive, functional replacement skills as directed.
Data Collection & Reporting
Collect accurate behavioural date, ABC charts, and progress measurements as directed
Report changes in behaviour patterns promptly to supervisors.
Participate in team meetings, and communication debriefs
Skill Development
Teach and support clients in developing functional communication, emotional regulation, social skills, and daily living skills as directed.
Safety & Professional Practice:
Follow safety protocols, crisis prevention strategies, and ethical guidelines when working with challenging behaviours.
Maintain a professional, calm, and supportive presence during behavioural escalations
Participate in ongoing training to ensure adherence with best practices.
Positive Engagement and Daily Interactions
Build warm, respectful, and supportive relationships with clients to promote trust, comfort, and emotional well-being.
Engage with clients in meaningful ways throughout the day, including conversation, shared activities, encouragement, and active participation in their routines.
Demonstrate patience, empathy, and professionalism at all times during interactions.
Maintain a positive presence in all environments, modeling calm and supportive behaviour.
Safety Awareness
Remain alert, attentive, and aware of client behaviour at all times to ensure early identification of escalation signs.
Be prepared to implement de-escalation strategies, intervention steps, and safety procedures according to the behavioral support plan immediately when required.
Maintaining a Safe Environment
Assist with household duties such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, and general upkeep of the environment as directed.
Support routine cleaning tasks to maintain a safe, hygienic, and organized space for clients and staff.
Follow all program guidelines related to housekeeping, sanitation, and environmental maintenance.
Work Environment and Assignment Flexibility
Behavioural Support Workers may be assigned to support clients in a variety of service environments, including but not limited to:
Residential programs
Day program centres
Community-based settings
In-home services
Assignment locations and hours may change based on client needs, staffing coverage, or organizational requirements. Flexibility is an essential part of the position to ensure clients receive consistent, high-quality support.
Some locations and/or clients may require personal care tasks, which staff will complete respectfully and according to established procedures.
Staff assigned to overnight shifts are required to remain awake and alert for the full duration of their shift to ensure client safety, supervision, and timely response to any needs or incidents.
Qualifications
Diploma or degree in Behavioural science, Psychology, Social services, Child and Youth, Early Childhood, or related field.
1-2 years experience supporting individuals with developmental disabilities, trauma, attachment disorder and Behavioral Challenges is required
Experience implementing behavior strategies and supporting individuals with behavioural challenges is an asset
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Training in ABA principles, NVCI, or other crisis intervention methods is an asset
New Brunswick Class 5 license, reliable vehicle and willingness to drive clients is an asset.
